The Gumpathon
Four guys, two months, 3,630 miles, one epic challenge
On 1 April 2010 four runners will set out from New York with the intention of reaching LA by 6 June and raising a substantial amount of money for injured service men and women on both sides of the Atlantic. The Gumpathon represents a unique challenge which stretches 3,630 miles, crosses three deserts, four time zones and ten mountain ranges with each runner covering 16 miles in relay formation, completing over 60 miles a day and the equivalent of 34 marathons over the two month period. Inspired by Forest Gump's epic run across America, The Gumpathon is the brain-child of Colour Sergeant Damian Todd, Royal Marines who will be running alongside Colour Sergeant Brad Keeling, Royal Marines; Royal Marine Jamie Jobson and Monty Halls, ex-Royal Marine turned television presenter. It is hoped that they will be joined throughout the two months by a US Marine who will be running with them and supported by a crew drawn from both the Royal Marines and British Army including triple amputee Mark Ormrod, RM who is also hoping to run at least a mile per day.
All money raised from the Gumpathon will go to two charities: Help for Heroes (H4H) and the Injured US Marine Semper Fi Fund. Both of these organizations raise funds to support wounded and ill members of the Armed Forces, and their families, throughout their recovery period. The challenge has received endorsement from Major-General Gary Robison Royal Marines, General Sir Richard Dannatt and General Al Gray, Former Commandant of the US Marine Corps and Chairman of the Injured US Marine Semper Fi Fund.
